Dixie Chicks lead singer sued for defamation
December 5th, 2008 - 1:24 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Dec 5 (IANS) Country music band Dixie Chicks is being sued by the stepfather of a murdered Arkansas child, Steve Branch, for defamation.Steve was killed in 1993 along with two other children - Christopher Byers and Michael Moore. Contactmusic.com reports that Steve’s stepfather Terry Hobbs is suing the band over statements made by lead singer Natalie Maines, who has alleged that Hobbs was involved in the killings of the three boys.
Hobbs filed suit in Pulaski County Circuit Court on Nov 25. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages. Hobbs claims he suffered loss of income, injury to his reputation and emotional distress.
Hobbs accused the band, but specifically pointed out Maines for the comments she made during a concert in Arkansas last year.
Maines claimed Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelley - known to sympathizers as the “West Memphis Three” - were innocent and that supposed new evidence pointed to Hobbs.
Other celebrities too are asking authorities to overturn the original conviction. Some of them even took part in a rally in Little Rock last year.
