Distressed at crop failure, Orissa farmer commits suicide
October 22nd, 2009 - 12:28 am ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, Oct 21 (IANS) Crop loss and the failure to repay a loan led a farmer in Orissa’s Nabarangpur district to commit suicide Wednesday, police said.
Sunil Suttar from Mudrana village in Nabarangpur district died after he consumed pesticide Wednesday, his family members said.
“He was under tremendous pressure as he could not repay the loan he had taken. He was mentally disturbed for the last two days. He committed suicide as he feared that he could not pay the loan he had taken due to crop loss this year,” said Nirmal Suttar, the brother of Sunil Suttar.
According to the family members of the farmer, Sunil had borrowed about Rs.40,000.
“It appears that the farmer has committed suicide distressed over crop failure and loan burden,” a police officer said.
