Disgraced paedophile rocker arrives in London (Lead)
August 22nd, 2008 - 4:03 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Aug 22 (DPA) Disgraced British glam-rock star and convicted paedophile Gary Glitter arrived here Friday, after spending three days in airport transit lounges trying to seek entrance to Thailand and Hong Kong following his release from jail for child abuse. The 64-year-old arrived at Heathrow airport where he was expected by British police to be registered as a sex offender. He had spent almost three years in jail in Vietnam for molesting two preteen girls.
His arrival ended a three-day relay to Thai and Hong Kong airports where Glitter was denied entrance. The rocker first refused to travel to London as planned, staying in the transit lounge of Bangkok’s international airport instead.
He later boarded a place and sought entrance to Hong Kong but was also banned from entering there.
Glitter, 64, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was arrested at the Ho Chi Minh City airport in November 2005 as he tried to catch a flight to Bangkok after being accused of sexually assaulting two girls, aged 11 and 12, in Vietnam.
His three-year sentence was later reduced by three months under a Vietnamese amnesty.
Glitter’s first arrest on charges related to child sex laws was in Britain in 1997 when thousands of images of child pornography were found on his computer after he took it to be repaired.
He was sentenced to four months in prison and served two before resettling in Southeast Asia.
Glitter became famous for his flamboyant costumes and behaviour during the glam-rock period and was known for hits like “I’m the Leader of the Gang”, “Do You Wanna Touch Me”, “Hello! Hello! I’m Back Again”, and “I Love You Love Me Love”.
