Disabled examinees in Delhi to get extra time
October 29th, 2010 - 8:01 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS) The disabled students in Delhi will be given extra time during exams, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said Friday.
The State Council of Education, Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi, will now allow 20 minutes of extra time per hour of examination to disabled examinees taking assistance of a writer, the NHRC statement said.
“In response to the recommendations of the commission, the SCERT in a communication dated Sep 17 informed that provision for extra time to disabled examinees will be implemented for the forthcoming examinations scheduled to be held in April-May 2011 onwards,” the statement said.
The examinations for the year 2010 were almost over by the time recommendations of the NHRC could be implemented.
“The NHRC took up the issue on a complaint filed by Ankit Gautam May 10, 2010. In his complaint he prayed for urgent intervention of the commission for the direction to the director and examination controller of SCERT, Delhi, to allow him an additional hour for the written test to be held from May 14, 2010, as he was disabled,” the statement said.
“The Controller of Examination, SCERT, in his report dated May 13, 2010, revealed that the complainant was allowed half an hour extra time along with a writer for the examination,” it added.
The NHRC has now asked chief secretaries of other states to take similar action like the SCERT, Delhi, so that the interest of disabled students can be accommodated.
