Lucknow, Nov 6 (IANS) Tension has gripped a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district after some unidentified people desecrated a statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar, the police said Thursday. Many people took to the streets Thursday demanding action against the culprits and to register their protest against the desecration, the police added.

“A case has been registered against unidentified persons, who desecrated the Ambedkar statue in Tulapur village in Jaunpur Wednesday night,” deputy superintendent of police O.V. Singh told IANS on phone.

It is for the second time that an Ambedkar statue has been desecrated in the region within a week, he added.

Janpur is some 200 km from Lucknow.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, also known as Babasaheb, was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a Dalit leader.

Police believe the incident is a fallout of a land dispute between a group of Dalit Buddhists and other residents.

“Following the protest, security has been strengthened in the village. An inquiry has already been initiated and the culprits would be nabbed soon,” claimed Singh.
