Kolkata, Feb 5 (IANS) A dentist in a premier government hospital of the city allegedly slapped a seven-year-old boy repeatedly after he refused to get a tooth pulled out, the police said Thursday.Diganta Sarkar went with his grandmother to get a tooth extracted at R. Ahmed Dental College on Jagadish Chandra Bose Road Wednesday morning.

“Sarkar’s family members have lodged an FIR that the dentist, Prasanta Pal, slapped him repeatedly Wednesday after he (the boy) tried to prevent him from extracting a tooth. We are looking into the matter,” an officer at Muchipara police station said.

Sarkar said Pal was very rude to him from the moment he entered the chamber.

“The doctor tried to push the (anaesthetic) injection very roughly. When I screamed, he scolded me. I was scared and prevented him from extracting the tooth. I asked him to let me go to my grandmother, who was waiting outside.”

“On hearing this, Pal started slapping me continuously. Two other doctors also joined (him). They slapped me ten times. They stopped only after my grandmother came to my rescue, hearing my cries,” Sarkar said.

The principal of the dental college - the oldest in Asia - Dibyendu Majumder said he received the complaint from Sarkar’s guardians only Thursday afternoon. “The police have also contacted me. I have formed a probe committee which will submit its findings Friday.”

“If he has indeed been slapped, that’s bad. This shouldn’t have happened. If the allegations are true, action will be taken against the guilty as per government rules,” he said.
