Dempo win 2-0 in an I-league encounter

Kolkata, Nov 20 (IANS) Dempo Sports Club stamped their domination with a 2-0 victory over Mohammedan Sporting in an I-league encounter here Thursday.Anthony Pereira and Ranty Martins struck for the Goans, with both the goals coming in the first session of the tie at the Salt Lake stadium.

Dempo went ahead as early as in the ninth minute when Sporting custodian Tharangachan, who otherwise put up a brilliant show, faltered as his clearance landed in Pereira’s feet, and the latter bulleted a left-foot volley into the net.

The visitors doubled the margin in the 39th minute when the Brazilian Ranty found the target with a rasping right footer which Tharangachan failed to save despite going full stretch on the ground.

Dempo could have ended the match with a wider margin, but for Tharangachan who brought off some excellent saves.

The goalkeeper denied Ranty Martins from close, and followed it up by thwarting Joaquim Abranches’ rebound in the tenth minute.

Later in the session, he again dived to the left to punch away a snap header from Ranty as the ball remained largely confined in the Sporting territory.

However, the locals came close to scoring in the 48th minute, but Goutam Thakur’s header sailed over. They got another chance in the 65th minute, but Jothi Kumar failed to find the mark.

After eight rounds, Dempo are at the seventh spot with 11 points. With nine points in their kitty, Sporting now lie tenth.
