‘Demolition man’ heads for second stint in Delhi

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 28 (IANS) He’s said to have knocked down 14,310 illegal buildings in his first stint in the capital. As K.J. Alphonse again heads to Delhi after spending over a decade in Kerala, the bureaucrat-cum-legislator plans to ‘demolish’ immorality in politics while sitting in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office.
The ‘demolition man’, as he’s called, thanks to his reputation as the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) commissioner, bid adieu to his former colleagues in the Kerala assembly canteen Wednesday and said that he was leaving for good and would be operating full time in politics.
After serving over two decades in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) as a top bureaucrat, Alphonse quit service in 2006 to contest Kerala assembly polls.
Soon after finishing his five-year stint as an elected independent legislator of the Left Democratic Front, Alphonse earlier this year decided not to seek re-election and instead opted to join BJP.
Soon, he was made a member of the national executive of the party.
Speaking to IANS, Alphonse, also known here as Kannanthanam, said he was pleased to be back in Delhi where his two children grew up.
“From 1992 to 2000, I was in Delhi and worked as commissioner of the DDA (Delhi Development Authority). Due to the strong stand I took when it came to knocking down illegal buildings of the high and mighty, my wife and children were attacked. But I stood my ground,” he said
“Now, my objective would be to demolish the immorality in politics. I would be working alongside BJP president Nitin Gadkari and would deal in the area of good governance,” he said.
