The bar council decided to observe a day-long protest Jan 20 against the the Legal Practitioners Bill, 2010 and the Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011. The strike will be observed in all six district courts of Delhi.
“The government intends to take over the powers of the bar council by establishing ombudsmen, consisting of judges, to hear complaints against lawyers, and take over the authority of the council over legal education,” said Rajiv Khosla, spokesperson of co-ordination committee of all District Court Bar Associations of Delhi.
Khosla said that the bar council was formed by parliament. It was assigned the responsibility of taking disciplinary action against advocates, therefore, there was no requirement of any other authority for the task.
