Delhi to host ‘Slut Walk’ Sunday
July 29th, 2011 - 8:38 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 29 (IANS) Delhi will Sunday host the country’s first Slut Walk, or ‘Besharmi Morcha’ — a campaign to protest the random usage of the word ’slut’ and sexual violence against women, the event’s organisers said.
“We have shortened our initial route and are now starting the walk from the Free Church to YWCA all the way to Jantar Mantar (in central Delhi). We have taken permission from the Delhi Police for the walk,” Mishika Singh, one of the organisers, told IANS.
“We are expecting a few hundreds to participate in the walk,” she added.
Slut Walks have become a global phenomenon to protest against sexual violence after a police officer in Toronto caused outrage by stating in a speech to university students this year that women should avoid “dressing like sluts” to avoid being victimised.
The event here will, however, be a toned down version of the walks elsewhere, which have seen women dress in skimpy clothing to challenge the mindset that victims of sexual violence should be blamed for the assault on them.
According to Singh, the walk will also include a street play and a performance by the Delhi Drums Circle — a group of musician playing musical instruments from different parts of the world.
