Delhi to get rid of fake driving licenses
December 23rd, 2009 - 9:26 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed Delhi Police to launch a drive against fake driving licenses, investigate the sources from which these are obtained and prosecute those involved.
Justice J.R.Midha directed the police to communicate to the insurance companies whenever they came across instances of fake driving licences during investigation of an accident case.
“Police is directed to investigate the sources from which such fake licences are obtained and depending on the result of investigation prosecute them accordingly,” the court said.
Delhi Police also assured the court they will launch a drive against fake licenses soon.
The court had earlier suggested that the police constitute a special cell for maintaining records of fake driving licenses to curb road accidents by drivers not qualified to drive.
“The victims suffer because the insurance companies deny the liability on the ground of fake licence. However, no action is taken by any authority against persons who hold or issue fake licenses,” the court ruled.
The court was told by the insurance companies that the police never made any serious effort to ascertain the genuineness of a license and in most cases these came to light only after an accident when it was verified by the investigator appointed by insurance companies.
