New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) Four women and a man have been arrested here on charges of beating a three-month pregnant woman and her male colleague in northwest Delhi in the latest case of road rage, police said Wednesday. Kamla Baniwal, 40, her daughter Sushma Baniwal, 22, their neighbour Vidya Pandey, 38, and Pandey’s daughter Rachna, 20, were taken into custody along with Satish late Tuesday for attacking Divya, 30, and her colleague Sunil near the Prashant Vihar Chowk.

Police said Kamla were driving her daughter and neighbours home in her Tata Indigo car. She was driving rashly and tried to overtake a Maruti car Sunil was driving, taking Divya to her Rohini home.

Kamla eventually overtook Sunil’s car and forced him to stop. Sunil and Divya work for an event management company.

“The four women came out of their car and got into a heated argument with Sunil and Divya. They beat up Divya and Sunil. Divya’s clothes were torn. They also telephoned a muscle man Sunil, who also showered blows on them,” said a senior police officer.

Divya and Sunil called the police control room. The four women initially claimed that they were set upon by four men. But the police realised that this was a concocted account.

Divya was taken to a hospital where doctors discharged her after initial treatment.

Kamla, Sushma, Vidya and Rachna were booked under the Indian Penal Code’s sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 337 (causing hurt by endangering life) and 341 (wrongful restraint). They were later released on bail.

Satish has been arrested on non-bailable offences.
