Delhi Police, the third most complained against in India
January 21st, 2011 - 5:59 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS) Delhi Police had more than 6,000 complaints registered against them in 2009 - the third highest in the country after the police forces in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.Madhya Pradesh Police topped with 15,903 complaints registered against them, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) data for 2009. Uttar Pradesh followed with 10,953 compalints, and Delhi Police had about 6,155 complaints registered against them.
No complaint was registered against the police forces in the Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
There has been an increase in the number of disciplinary actions taken against police personnel in the country while the number of complaints against them has gone down.
A total of 61,560 complaints were registered against police personnel in 2005, and 22,503 of them faced disciplinary action. In 2009, the complaints decreased to 54,873 and action was taken against 28,819.
The data revealed that 191 cases of human rights violations by police forces were reported across the country in 2009. A total of 83 policemen were charge sheeted and 58 were convicted in such violation cases during the year.
Assam reported the maximum number of human rights violations cases at 96, about 50 percent of the total, followed by Chhattisgarh with 67 cases.
