According to police, the deceased was identified as Akhil Sahni, a resident of New Rajender Nagar in Delhi.
He and his wife Shweta were sitting on the rear seat of an Indica car while their driver was driving the vehicle when a speeding vehicle hit it in the rear Monday evening at Derabassi town, some 15 km from Chandigarh, on the highway connecting Chandigarh to Ambala.
“Their car was hit by a Honda CRV in the rear and the collision was so strong that their Indica car rolled down the road,” said a police official here Tuesday.
Akhil and his wife were returning to Delhi after meeting relatives in Mohali town, neighbouring Chandigarh.
He added: “Akhil was immediately taken to the civil hospital here where doctors declared him dead. His wife and driver sustained minor injuries and they are recuperating in the hospital. During the investigation we found that a woman was driving the Honda CRV but she managed to flee, leaving behind her vehicle on the accident spot.”
Police have registered a case against an unknown woman and started investigation.
Police said that they have informed the relatives of Akhil, who married Shweta two years ago. They would hand over his body to his relatives after a post-mortem Tuesday.
