Delhi government meeting on superbug Friday
October 5th, 2011 - 11:40 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS) Delhi Health Minister A.K. Walia would Friday meet all stakeholders and discuss issues related to the alleged prevalence of antibiotic-resistant superbug in the city.
“We will hold a meeting on Friday and all the stakeholders will be present in the meeting. Though we have not received any report, we will take this matter seriously,” said Walia.
The decision comes after a study carried out by Sir Ganga Ram Hospital which said that there was a prevalence of superbug in the capital.
Reports from a British medical journal earlier alleged the presence of a bacteria with multi-drug resistant gene — New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) — that was resistant to almost all antibiotics.
The journal later reported in a study that the NDM-1 was found in Delhi’s sewage and drinking water.
Scientists feared the spread of the enzyme worldwide due to its high antibiotic resistance, to fight which nothing has been developed so far.
The union health ministry has denied any threat by superbug NDM-1.
