Delhi firemen get 210 calls on Diwali

New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) It was a busy Diwali for the Delhi Fire Service as it received 210 calls from across the city till early Thursday, but no casualty was reported, an official said.

“We got 210 calls from Wednesday morning to early Thursday,” said a Delhi Fire Service official.

“Of the 210 fire incidents, 85 were caused by firecrackers,” the official added.

The number of calls this year was more than last year’s 169. In 2009, the number was 207.

Among the incidents, three major fires were reported in the capital.

A fire broke out on the ground floor of a three-storey building in north Delhi’s Rohini sector 7 around 8.30 p.m. Wednesday, said police.

“Six people, including two children, passed out due to the smoke emitted from the fire. They were taken to a nearby hospital and have been discharged,” said a police official.

Another incident was reported in north Delhi’s Roop Nagar area when fire broke out in a factory - Jaipuria Cotton Mills.

“Twenty-six fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire. The incident was reported around midnight Wednesday,” said a police official.

In the third incident, fire broke out in east Delhi’s Ghazipur Mandi Wednesday evening but no casualty was reported, said police.

Delhi has 53 operational fire stations and a workforce of over 3,000 fire fighters.
