The court was hearing the plea of Sonu’s mother. The young man was allegedly beaten up by policemen after he helped a victim of a roadside brawl in August. The court took suo moto cognizance of the case following a media report highlighting the incident, after which the woman allegedly began receiving threats from police officials.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar said: “We are really disturbed with the behaviour of the police officer (Investigating Officer). It is very unfortunate that incidents like this are happening. If a citizen can be threatened by police, then who is safe in the city?”
The court asked the police to file a detailed reply about the allegations levelled against them by the victim’s mother by Dec 9, the next date of hearing.
Meanwhile, advocate Meera Bhatia, counsel for Delhi Police, informed the court that police were providing security to Sonu’s family.
Sonu’s mother approached the court, accusing police officials of threatening her to withdraw the case against them or else face consequences.
Sonu, a metal merchant from Faridabad, was allegedly thrashed by police on July 30 after he took an injured man to a hospital near the Welcome Metro Station in northeast Delhi.
Sonu’s mother alleged that she paid Rs.5,000 in bribe to make the police free her son who was illegally detained.
