Delhi court orders Kiran Bedi to be booked for cheating
November 26th, 2011 - 10:15 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 26 (IANS) A Delhi court Saturday directed Delhi Police to file a case against former top cop and Team Anna member Kiran Bedi for alleged cheating and misappropriation of funds in collusion with foreign companies and foundations. Bedi said the development did not surprise her.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Bansal directed the deputy commissioner of Delhi Police’s crime branch to lodge the first information report against Bedi on a complaint filed by petitioner Devinder Chauhan.
Chauhan alleged that Bedi cheated various paramilitary forces and state police organisations on the pretext of providing free computer training to troopers’ families under the banner of her NGO India Vision Foundation.
“Microsoft donated more than Rs.50 lakh to Bedi for the free training. Instead, Bedi in conspiracy with unknown persons cheated Vedanta Foundation and made a plan to cheat the families of the security personnel. She planned to collect Rs.20,000 per month from each training centre,” said the complaint.
According to Chauhan, of the total money, Bedi was to get Rs.6,000 for providing land and electricity to the training centre, whereas these were arranged by police organisations.
“Bedi entered into a donation agreement with Vedanta which was to pay Rs.6,000 to her two NGOs — India Vision Foundation and Navjyoti Foundation,” claimed Chauhan.
Bedi said she was not surprised by the development and it only strengthened her resolve to do more.
“I am informed an FIR is registered against me. For me now nothing is a surprise!” Bedi said in a comment on micro-blogging site Twitter.
“It only strengthens my resolve to do more,” she added.
The court directed Chauhan to submit more evidence related to the case against Bedi.
Bedi was caught in a controversy last month for allegedly overcharging various social organisations and educational institutions that invited her for lectures by charging them for business class air tickets even though she bought economy class tickets.
She admitted that she charged various NGOs business class airfare while buying the lower class tickets, but said the excess money went into her own NGO.
