Delhi concert to urge action on millennium goals
September 16th, 2010 - 2:40 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS) Three composers from Manipur, Delhi and Tamil Nadu will team up with 100 percussionists at a concert here Saturday organised by the United Nations to drum up the action on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Composers Sharat Chandra Srivastava, Mayanglambam Mangangsana and Shri Ganesh will perform along with the percussionists at the Purana Qila concert.
The UN in India, in partnership with the European Union, Oxfam India, Save the Children, Asian Development Bank and Wada Na Todo Abhiyan, is organising the special concert.
“At the heart of the Millennium Declaration is the commitment made by nations of the world to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality and equity,” said Patrice Coeur-Bizot, the United Nations resident coordinator, in a statement.
“The concert will take place on the eve of the 10-year review of the MDGs by the UN General Assembly. It is designed to raise awareness and highlight the urgency to accelerate progress towards achievement of the Goals,” said Coeur-Bizot.
The concert, designed by Sanjeev Bhargava of Seher, will be one of the many events around the world from Sep 17-19 as part of a global campaign to urge governments to make good on the promises they made in the year 2000 at the UN.
There will also be a photo exhibition highlighting the efforts being made by various stakeholders to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and hunger across India.
The event will also be endorsed by celebrity ambassadors Preity Zinta and Rahul Bose.
