New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) The first day of the budget session of the Delhi assembly began on a chaotic note Tuesday as the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created a ruckus, demanding the resignation of a minister accused of shielding a tax evading company, resulting in the house being adjourned temporarily.
The Delhi Lokayukta (ombudsman) Justice Manmohan Sarin Feb 24 recommended the sacking of PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan for trying to protect a leading resort in a tax evasion case, holding him “guilty of misconduct”.
The BJP jumped into action soon after the speech of Delhi Governor Tejender Khanna and the assembly had to be adjourned for 10 minutes.
“The Lokayukta has made the recommendations regarding Chauhan’s resignation to the president and not me. Whatever is the decision take by the president will be acceptable,” Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit told reporters outside the house.
Meanwhile, leader of opposition V.K. Malhotra said: “The chief minister should have endorsed Chauhan’s resignation soon after the Lokayukta recommended it.”
The members also observed a two-minute silence for the victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, as well as the demise of senior Congress leader Arjun Singh.
Speaker Yoganand Shastri said Monday that the session will have at least 13 sittings and will conclude March 31.
