Deaths on Delhi roads down by 8 percent, say police

Facebook New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Fewer lives were lost in fatal accidents on Delhi’s roads in the first six months this year as compared to last year. The drop has been of over eight percent, Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta said Saturday.

He said 970 people were killed in accidents this year as compared to 1,062 during the comparable period in 2010.

Increased surveillance and regular crackdowns against traffic violations like drunken driving resulted in a drop of nearly eight percent in fatal accidents during this period, the commissioner told media persons here.

“Fatal accidents have gone down from 1,026 in the first six months of 2010 to 944 this year,” Gupta said.

During this period, 9,321 motorists were fined for drunken driving as against 5,938 in 2010, he said.

In addition, 1,490 driving licences were suspended and 1,713 people were imprisoned in the first six months this year.

Prosecution for traffic violations by cabs carrying school children and vehicles using illegal beacons illegally have witnessed a steep increase this year, Gupta aid.

“About 2,462 school cabs have been fined this year against 402 in 2010, while 263 vehicles have been fined for illegally using beacons as against six last year,” he said.

A total of 21,658 commercial vehicles were fined this year as compared to 16,877 last year.

According to the commissioner, Delhi Police’s public interface through social networking sites and SMS service had also gained immense popularity.

“We have 66,310 contacts on Facebook, 103,099 SMS alert subscribers and 3,691 Twitter responders,” said Gupta.
