Death toll in Orissa flood rises to 22

Bhubaneswar, Sep 14 (IANS) The death toll from floods that have so far damaged 30,000 homes and affected more than two million people in over a week in Orissa rose to 22 Wednesday, officials said.

The latest two deaths have been reported one each from the district of Jajpur and Kurdha, a flood control room official told IANS.

Besides, 12 other people were swept away or drowned in flood waters in different places but their bodies have not yet been found, he said.

Four helicopters of Indian Navy and Indian Air Force which were engaged to drop food packets in worst hit areas suspended their operation for few hours during the forenoon due to rains but resumed again in the afternoon, he said.

The state government in a statement said about 300 relief camps and free kitchen centres have been opened in the affected areas and food relief provided to more than one and half lakh victims.

However, affected people are complaining of not getting drinking water, foods and shelters.

Scores of people are taking shelter on rooftops, embankments and on roads under the open sky.

The floods triggered by heavy rains and release of huge water from Hirakud dam have affected 19 of state’s 30 districts.The districts worst hit by the calamity include Jagatsingpur, Kendrapada, Puri, Boudh, Subarnapur, Cuttack and Nayagarh.

The government said the water has started receding fast.
