Dead grandpa found guilty, so grandson finedMarch 24th, 2008 - 11:51 am ICT by admin
Meerut, March 24 (IANS) A man here has been fined Rs.12 by a ‘panchayat’ (village council) for a false complaint his late grandfather made 100 years ago - against his own father-in-law. Nearly a century ago, Kalloo, a resident of Kaili village in Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, had alleged that his father-in-law had illicit relationship with a woman.
The case dragged on. Kallo died of old age. But the panchayat continued to hear the case, eventually ruling a week ago that the dead man’s allegation against his father-in-law was baseless.
After a marathon 40-hour session, the village elders ruled that Naushada, the complainant’s grandson, should be punished for his grandfather’s folly.
Initially, the panchayat wanted him to dip his hand in a pan of boiling oil. But later this was changed to a fine of Rs.12.
Meerut District Magistrate Kamini Ratan Chauhan said it was a good sign that petty issues were being solved at the panchayat level, but made it clear that no one was above the law of the land.
