Dalai Lama offers Rs.500,000 for quake relief
September 20th, 2011 - 7:56 pm ICT by IANSDharamsala, Sep 20 (IANS) Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama Tuesday expressed grief over the deaths due to the earthquake that hit eastern and northern India, Nepal and Tibet, and donated Rs.500,000 for relief work in Sikkim.
In a letter to Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, the Nobel laureate said: “I was saddened to learn about the loss of life and damage to property… I offer my sympathy and condolences to all those families who have been directly affected by what I understand is one of the worst earthquakes in recent memory.”
He donated Rs.500,000 from the Dalai Lama Trust towards relief work in the affected areas of Sikkim, the Dalai Lama’s office said here.
At least 68 people in India died in Sunday’s 6.8 magnitude earthquake, which had its epicentre on the Sikkim-Nepal border.
