New Delhi, May 22 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an inspector of Customs and Central Excise for accepting a bribe of Rs.8,000, according to an official statement Friday.
“Vimil Kumar Sirohi, who is posted in the office of Commissioner of Central Excise at New Delhi here, was arrested Thursday for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.8,000 from the complainant,” it said.

The complainant - an accountant in a private firm - had deposited a bank guarantee of Rs.100,000 with the central excise department, which expired on March 10 and was pending for clearance with Sirohi, who demanded a bribe of Rs.8,000 for releasing it, the statement added.

The complainant then lodged a complaint with the CBI, who laid a trap and caught Sirohi red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe.

“Searches were conducted at his office and residence during which documents relating to immovable properties, bank accounts and life insurance policies were recovered,” the statement said.

Sirohi was produced before a city court which sent him to judicial custody up to June 4.
