Chennai, May 21 (IANS) Shoddy maintenance of a residential building’s lift system caused the death of a teenager in the southern suburb of Selaiyur here late Tuesday evening, the police said. A door leading to the lift had its glass window missing. The victim, P. Bharat Raj, 17, stuck his head through to see where the lift was. The descending lift crushed his head, said the police.

Fire service personnel recovered the body. It was sent for an autopsy. The police have registered a case of criminal negligence against the secretary of the building society.
