Curfew lifted in Kishtwar and Poonch districts

Jammu, Sep 2 (IANS) The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday lifted curfew from entire Jammu region, including districts of Kishtwar and Poonch.While curfew was lifted from eight districts of Jammu region Monday following an agreement between the state government and Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti - a conglomerate of over 30 Hindu groups Sunday - the two districts were kept under curfew because of the communal tensions.

But after assessing the situation and also in view of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the authorities Tuesday lifted the curfew in these two districts.

“There is a considerable improvement in the situation in both the districts,” provincial administration told IANS. “In the light of this, curfew has been lifted there too.”

Two people were killed and several injured during the communal clashes.

The communal clashes were sparked off by more than two month-long agitation in Jammu for the restoration of 40 hectares of land in the Kashmir Valley to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
