Jammu, Aug 23 (IANS) Curfew was imposed in the border town of Poonch Saturday and the army was alerted after communal clashes even as curfew in Jammu was relaxed on the eve of the Janmashtami festival, police said.Warring groups in Poonch set afire shops of each other and more than a dozen shops were burnt, a police official said. He said the trouble erupted over two rival processions over the Amarnath land row.

Authorities lifted curfew in Jammu ahead of Sunday’s Janmashtami festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. A huge procession was taken out here on the eve of Janmashthami - though most participants chanted slogans hailing Lord Shiva instead.

“Bam Bam Bhole”, hailing Shiva, has become the popular slogan of agitators here ever since the agitation started seeking restoration of land transfer to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) July 1 - the day the Jammu and Kashmir government cancelled an order diverting a piece of 40 hectares of land to the temple trust after protests in the Kashmir valley.
