Havana, Dec 5 (IANS) The development achieved by Cuba’s health sector has made it possible for the country to have one of the lowest infant mortality rates — 4.5 per 1,000 live births — in the American continent, Prensa Latina news agency reported.

The life expectancy has also increased to over 77 years because of the control of many non-transmissible chronic diseases, it said.

The development of many state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment technologies, as well as vaccines and other biotechnological products, are part of the progress registered in this nation in the past 50 years.

From 1959 till date, over 95,000 doctors and thousands of dentists, nurses and health technicians have graduated in Cuba.

The report said the “Operation Miracle”, a project that began in 2004, has led to over two million eye surgeries being performed on patients from 32 countries.
