CRPF vehicle runs over woman in West Bengal

Kolkata, April 6 (IANS) A speeding Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) truck killed a woman here Sunday, and angry crowds scuffled with the CRPF personnel and hurled crude bombs at their vehicles, causing injuries to three CRPF men, the police said. “A 21-year-old woman, Pooja Daga, was killed on the spot and a motorcyclist, with whom she was going, was knocked down. The motorcyclist was admitted to a local hospital with minor head injury. The driver of the CRPF truck has been arrested,” Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohon Chakraborty told IANS.

The police said the accident took place when a convoy of four CRPF vehicles was passing through the area in the northern part of the city and one of the vehicles hit the motorbike.

Immediately after the accident, a mob attacked the CRPF vehicles and assaulted the driver and other personnel in the trucks. The locals also hurled three crude bombs at the truck, Chakraborty said.

An eyewitness, Ratan Sarkar, told IANS: “Three CRPF trucks and a CRPF bus were racing with one another, while Pooja and her friend Neeraj Garg were riding along the left side of the road. Suddenly one of the trucks hit the bike, smashing Pooja’s head. Neeraj was taken to the nearby Apollo Gleneagles Hospital with minor head injuries.”

Later, a huge contingent of police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) brought the situation under control.
