Bharatiya Janata Party New Delhi, April 4 (IANS) A Central Reserve Police Force trooper posted at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters here fired 15 rounds from his rifle Sunday night. The trooper, however, said the gun went off when he was cleaning it, police said Monday.

“Shamshad Ali, a CRPF constable in his 20s, at around 11.45 p.m. Sunday fired around 15 rounds from his INSAS assault rifle. No one was injured in the event,” said a senior Delhi Police officer.

During interrogation, Ali told the police that it was a mistake that happened while he was cleaning the rifle.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered under section 363 of the Indian Penal Code for endangering public life.

“We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. We are also questioning his colleagues and people present there,” said the officer.

A senior CRPF official said that they too are investigating the firing.

“It was not intentional and it happened by mistake. Sometimes, the rifle might be in an auto mode,” said the officer.

The officer ruled out that the trooper was frustrated as he had returned from leave only 15 days ago.

“Why it happened, we are looking into it,” he said.
