P. Chidambaram Gurgaon, Feb 8 (IANS) Intelligence gathering is vital for the paramilitary CRPF, whose role has significantly changed from maintaining law and order to conducting counter-insurgency operations, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Wednesday

Lauding the role of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast, Chidambaram said intelligence gathering plays very important role in combating Maoism and insurgency.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the CRPF’s dedicated intelligence cell at Kadarpur here.

Chidambaram said that although intelligence collection is the task of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the state police forces, the CRPF’s dedicated setup is meant to collect specific inputs relating to its counter-insurgency and anti-Maoist operations.

CRPF director general K. Vijay Kumar said: “With the establishment of CRPF Intelligence School, the force now will have its own integrated intelligence setup right from directorate to unit level. It will help in the vertical and seamless flow of intelligence.”

Faculty drawn from the Intelligence Bureau, the Research and Analysis Wing, Military Intelligence and the Central Bureau of Investigation will train the CRPF personnel. The home ministry has sanctioned 468 posts for the intelligence setup from constables to commandants. The CRPF has already appointed retired inspector general of police as Consultant (Intelligence) to head the new wing.
