Crime Branch told to probe kids’ deaths
December 16th, 2009 - 9:24 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the Crime Branch to probe the death of two kids who fell into open pits in a park in the Indian capital.
The court took the move after expressing dissatisfaction with the inquiry conducted by Delhi Police.
The deaths took place in a Municipal Corp of Delhi (MCD) park in northwest Delhi last month.
“We are not satisfied with the inquiry conducted by the police and are therefore transferring the case to Crime Branch,” said a division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar.
MCD counsel told the court that they were ready to compensate the parents of the children.
The court asked the Crime Branch to file a status report by Dec 27.
The two children, eight-year-old Arman and four-year-old Arshad, lived in a slum in northwest Delhi. The police said the two boys were missing Nov 25. Their bodies were spotted by a child playing in the municipal park at Shakarpur in a watery pit.
The police suspect the two fell into the seven-foot-deep trench while playing.
Construction and repair work was going on at the park. The pit appears to have been dug to dump construction material.
According to MCD, basic safety measures need to be taken at the workplace during digging including blocking off such areas or temporarily covering the holes with wooden planks.
