CPI-M to move amendments to Lokpal bill
December 26th, 2011 - 1:53 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 26 (IANS) Advocating a strong Lokpal outside the control of the government, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Monday said it would move two amendments to the “weak” and “deeply flawed” anti-graft bill introduced in the Lok Sabha last week.
“We are moving two amendments to the bill,” CPI-M MP Brinda Karat told reporters here.
She said the amendments were based on the CPI-M’s dissent note to the standing committee report on the Lokpal bill.
“We are asking for a full independent investigative agency under the total jurisdiction of the Lokpal which will have the sole prerogative to decide on all the cases that come under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
“The second important amendment is on the issue of selection and removal which at present the government was to keep full control of.”
Strongly opposed to the Lokpal bill, Karat said the government had a “negative” approach towards the legislation that envisages the creation of an effective ombudsman.
“As far as my party is concerned, my party’s opinion is that it is a very weak and deeply flawed bill. And it seems the government’s approach itself is so negative that it has put so many ifs and buts in the bill that is only going to help the people who want to escape courts for corruption,” the CPI-M leader said.
