Kolkata, Nov 3 (IANS) Ritobrata Banerjee, general secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist’s students wing Students Federation of India, will be the party’s candidate for the Lok Sabha by-election from Kolkata South to be held Nov 30, the Left Front said Thursday.
“It has been decided that Left Front nominated CPI-M candidate Ritobrata Banerjee will contest the Kolkata South Lok Sabha by-election,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose said in a statemenet issued here.
Ritobrata will be pitted against Trinamool Congress candidate Subrata Bakshi, who is a minister in the state cabinet.
The Lok Sabha constituency fell vacant after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resigned as MP and successfully fought the assembly by-election from Bhowanipore for her maiden entry into the state legislature.
Bakshi holds dual portfolios of transport and public works department in the state cabinet.
Banerjee had won from the constitutency by a margin of 219,571 votes over CPI-M candidate Rabin Deb in the 2009 general elections.
