CPI-M politburo meets to discuss poll debacle
June 10th, 2011 - 1:14 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, June 10 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) began a crucial politburo meeting here Friday to look into the reasons for its defeat in the West Bengal and Kerala assembly polls.
CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, Sitaram Yechuri, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Biman Bose and other top leaders are attending the daylong meet, the first after the assembly elections in five states.
However, senior leader and former chief minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is conspicuous by his absence. The reasons for his staying away from the meet have not been disclosed.
The politburo meet, followed by a two-day central committee meeting, will go into the reasons for the poll debacle and discuss the current political situation in the country, especially in the backdrop of corruption scandals and the anti-corruption fight by civil society, party sources said.
The meet, being held at MB Bhavan, party’s state headquarters, is also likely to chalk out its action plan for taking up various people’s issues.
The defeat in West Bengal at the hands of Trinamool Congress led to the end of 34-year-rule of the left front. Biman Bose, who is party’s West Bengal unit secretary, will submit a report to the politburo on the party’s poll debacle.
