Mamata Banerjee Kolkata, Sep 27 (IANS) A zonal office of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in West Bengal was attacked Tuesday, police said, with the party claiming that several workers were injured.

A CPI-M statement said Jamshed Bhavan - the Keshpur zonal office in West Midnapore district - was attacked by a large number of people, leaving several workers injured.

However, district police superintendent Pravin Tripathi said there was no reports of injury to anyone save for a police officer.

“One officer-in-charge has been injured. While there are no reports of injuries to others. Six people have been arrested so far in this connection,” said Tripathi.

Tripathi also refused to comment on the political affiliations of those arrested.

A CPI-M activist told a Bengali news channel that Jamshed Bhavan was attacked by over an 100 people.

“Many workers have been injured. Around 45 of us have been locked inside the first floor. The miscreants are trying to set the office ablaze,” the activist told the channel.

Condemning the attack, the CPI-M issued a statement demanding the state government take necessary steps to check continuing political violence since the regime change in May.

The statement said several people were injured, some of them critically in the incident. It also accused police of inaction while the miscreants went on rampage setting the office ablaze.

The party further alleged that since May, when Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress came to power, the state has been witnessing rampant political violence with Leftist party workers at the receiving end. 600 party offices have been attacked so far, said the statement.

Accusing the Trinamool Congress of being hand in glove with police, the party said false cased were being slapped on its workers.
