Court summons MCD chief over zoo flooding threat
July 13th, 2011 - 10:05 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 13 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner to appear before it to explain alleged lapses in a drain pipe repair which poses a threat of flooding to animals in the city’s zoo.
A flooding caused by backflow from the drain resulted in the death of over two dozen black bucks in the zoo last year.
The division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna summoned MCD Commissioner K.S. Mehra July 21.
“Explain the civic body’s failure in carrying out the repair work despite the court order,” said the bench.
The black bucks died in September 2010 after drinking contaminated water back-flowing from the drain.
The bench passed the order after a three-member panel set up by it submitted a report saying that the civic agency repaired the drain partially. A part of the drain was not repaired by the MCD which said that the responsibility of the task was that of the railways and the National Zoological Park.
“The MCD is yet to start the work despite the fact that the first instalment of Rs.5.65 crore towards the cost has already been paid by the management of the zoo,” said the committee report.
The bench directed the railways and the zoo, besides the MCD, to work in harmony to save the lives of animals.
The court earlier took suo motu cognisance of the news published in an English daily here warning that zoo animals may face a similar threat this monsoon.
