Court sentences Telgi to 7 years in jail
May 12th, 2010 - 8:07 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 12 (IANS) A city court Wednesday sentenced fake stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi to seven years’ imprisonment in a proceeding held through video-conferencing.
He was punished for entering into a criminal conspiracy with public servants, including a Delhi Police inspector, during the years from 1999 to 2001 and tampering with evidence and influencing investigation.
Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge P.S. Teji also imposed a fine of Rs.1 lakh on Telgi, who is lodged in a jail in Bangalore.
On April 26, the court held him guilty of various offences including criminal conspiracy and giving false evidence and other offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
According to CBI’s chargesheet, Telgi conspired with inspector Puran Singh, sub-inspector Gaurav Aggarwal, head constable Om Prakash and constables Sanjay Bajaj and Ratan Singh during 1999-2001.
The proceedings related to framing of charges against three policemen in the matter are still being conducted. The policemen had pleaded not guilty and claimed trial in the case.
The court has fixed June 2 as the next date of hearing in the matter.
