New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday ordered the central and the Delhi governments to submit their report by May 26 on the improvements made in the facilities and infrastructure provided to public prosecutors in the city’s five trial courts.
“Get first-hand idea after discussing various issues with district judges and then try to improve the conditions. Give them space, and then think about improving the infrastructure. They don’t even have tables and chairs to sit on,” said a division bench of Acting Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta.

Earlier, the bench has expressed concern on the working condition for prosecutors in the trial courts.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought appointment of more prosecutors to speed up hearings for 268 undertrials who are in jail for more than five years now due to delayed proceedings.

On this issue, the court had told the Delhi government that lack of infrastructure is the prime reason in not getting adequate number of prosecutors.

“Look at their condition of work and infrastructure - there are no fans, no coolers, no rooms. Nobody can work under such conditions,” Lokur had observed earlier.
