Court seeks detailed report on UP girl’s murder probe
June 17th, 2011 - 11:58 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, June 17 (IANS) The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court Friday directed the state government to submit by July 4 a detailed and conclusive report on the investigations in the murder of a minor girl inside a police station.
The direction was issued on the petition seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing and alleged rape of the 14-year-old girl in Lakhimpur-Kheri district.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the interim report of the Crime Branch-CID probe submitted by the state government Friday, the court sought a complete status report in the case by July 4, which was fixed as the next date for hearing the public interest litigation (PIL) moved by an NGO “We The People”.
The Lakhimpur district administration Thursday had recommended a letter of the victim’s family to the state government demanding a CBI inquiry into the case.
The girls’s body was found hanging from a tree June 10 inside the Nighasan police station premises in Lakhimpur-Kheri district.
The death was initially dismissed by police as suicide, but a second autopsy confirmed the girl was strangled to death.
As many as 12 policemen, including Superintendent of Police D.K. Rai, and three doctors who conducted the first autopsy have been suspended.
At present, the crime branch of the crime investigation department is investigating the murder case.
Ramchandra, a junior level employee at the Nighasan police station, has been arrested while sub-inspector B.K. Singh and two constables - Uma Shankar and Shiv Shankar - have been booked for tampering with evidence.
