Court reserves order on Abu Salem’s bail plea
September 24th, 2009 - 9:55 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 24 (IANS) A city court Thursday reserved its order on the bail plea of underworld gangster Abu Salem and said it will decide on Delhi Police’s plea for video-conferencing in an extortion case against him.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja refused to entertain Salem counsel Arvind Shukla’s plea that the trial be conducted on day-to-day basis.
Shukla contended that shuttling between Mumbai and Delhi is posing a great threat to Salem’s life.
The court reserved its bail order for Sep 30.
Shukla also opposed the plea of Delhi Police who want Salem’s trial to be conducted through video-conferencing, and said: “Why should his trial be separated from other accused? There is a sovereign promise of the Indian authorities before the Portuguese court that he (Salem) would be tried as a normal prisoner.”
The court, which heard the arguments from the prosecution and the defence on conducting the trial through video-conferencing, will deliver its order on Sep 30.
Salem, extradited from Portugal in November 2005, is being tried along with three others in the 2002 extortion case.
