Court pulls up MCD for not maintaining civic amenities
August 31st, 2009 - 11:37 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) A city court Monday pulled up the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for not maintaining civic amenities in the capital in spite of Supreme Court and Delhi High Court orders.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Ajay Pandey said, “Injury to the complainant and others is sufficient ground to proceed against them.”
The court also imposed a fine of Rs.15,000 each on 12 officials of the MCD.
Of the 12 MCD officials, six were present to give their reasons for the shabby state of the roads and other civic amenities in the capital.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Lt Col B.B. Sharan, president of an NGO Nyay Bhoomi, asking the court to jail all the senior officials of the MCD under section 166 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for not paying heed to the court orders.
The court had earlier this month taken cognizance of Sharan’s petition and summoned all the 12 respondents.
The petitioner had alleged that despite repeated orders from the high court and the Supreme Court, the civic agency was not providing proper basic amenities to the citizens of Delhi.
Sharan had pointed out that a drain running from the Narmada apartments to Nilgiri apartments in Alaknanda was filled with garbage.
