Court pulls up Delhi Police for protecting its officers
February 4th, 2010 - 12:24 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday pulled up the Delhi Police for not taking steps against their own guilty officers and instead trying to protect them.
A division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said, “What action you (Police) have taken against your own officials when prima facie it is clear that they are guilty?”
The court was hearing the case of a boy who was allegedly beaten up by policemen after he helped a victim of a roadside brawl.
Delhi Police counsel Pawan Sharma submitted before the court that the boy was involved in many criminal cases, so his version cannot be accepted.
On this the court said, “So that means a criminal cannot seek protection from the law. You don’t have any right to say that the boy is a criminal. He has been tortured by the police officials but no action has been taken against them.”
“Pointing fingers on others is easy,” the court said, asking the police to file an action taken report by Feb 10.
Sonu, a metal merchant from Faridabad, who was allegedly thrashed by police personnel on July 30 last year after he took an injured man to a hospital near the Welcome Metro Station in northeast Delhi.
Sonu’s mother alleged that she paid Rs.5,000 in bribe to make the police free her son who had been illegally detained.
