Court pulls up Delhi Police for detaining Good Samaritan
August 12th, 2009 - 10:45 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday pulled up Delhi Police for detaining a man who had helped someone injured in a roadside brawl, and ordered a vigilance inquiry into the incident.
Taking suo moto cognisance of a report in the Mail Today Aug 3, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Manmohan said, “Why can’t your officer, who is responsible for the incident, be booked?”
The court directed the special commissioner (vigilance) to conduct an inquiry and sought a detailed report by Sep 16, the next date of hearing.
Sonu, a metal merchant from Faridabad, was beaten up by police when he took a man injured in a roadside brawl to a hospital near the Welcome Metro Station in northeast Delhi.
According to Sonu’s mother, she had to pay a bribe of Rs.5,000 to police for his release.
The court also asked the victim to appear before the registrar general to express his grievance.
