A division bench of acting Chief Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta directed the police to provide the woman protection and told the District Investigating Unit (DIU) to monitor the case.
The matter was taken up by the court after converting into a public interest litigation (PIL) a letter received from the woman. In her letter, she alleged that constable Ombir, posted at Ambedkar Nagar police station, allegedly made threatening calls to her and attempted to harm her physically.
Directing police to make sure that no harm was caused to the woman, who appeared in court, the bench said the calls being made to the woman should also be monitored and her whereabouts should not be disclosed.
Police counsel told the court that an FIR had been registered against Ombir following her complaint.
In her letter, the woman accused Ombir of marrying her in a temple in March 2008 without disclosing that he was already married.
