June 17th, 2010 - 9:10 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 17 (IANS) Fearing honour killing, a couple who married without the consent of their families Thursday approached the Delhi High Court which granted them protection.
Vacation bench of Justice S.N. Dhingra directed Delhi Police to give protection to the city-based couple, who belong to Aligarh.
Anuj Chauhan and Gunjan, who belong to different castes got married May 3 at a temple here in east Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar.
The couple were receiving constant threats from the girl’s family, the petition said.
The petition said they wrote letters to the Uttar Pradesh government and state police but no action was taken on their complaint. They then decided to approach the court.
The court issued notice to Gunjan’s parents and also to director general of police, Uttar Pradesh, and senior superintendent of police, Aligarh, and asked them to file their responses by July 14.
The court directed Delhi Police to depute a constable to visit the couple’s home daily and submit a report by the next date of hearing.
