New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) The Delhi High court Wednesday asked the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) along with a panel of lawyers to hold camps for educating and registering workers employed at the Commonwealth Games construction sites.
A division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan asked the DLSA to work in tandem with the social welfare department of Delhi government and social group People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) to hold camps for telling them about their rights.

The bench also directed the Delhi Police to provide adequate security to the workers who fail to attend the camps due to pressure from their contractors.

The contractors were also warned and directed by the bench to provide all the benefits to the workers under the of the provisions of the Building and Other Construction Worker’s (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996.

On being informed by the PUDR that the contractors were still not providing safety kits to workers at construction sites, the bench asked the government to take action against them.

The DLSA Wednesday said in its report that till now they have managed to register 1,529 workers working at Games sites.

Colin Gonsalves appearing for the PUDR informed the court that there were more than 50,000 workers at various construction sites and the government must speed up the registration as less than two months were left for the start of the Games.

Nazmi Waziri, appearing for the social welfare department, said that the department has been doing its best to provide registration cards to the workers and till now they have managed to register around 36,233 workers.

The court asked the DLSA to submit a report by Sep 1.
