Court lets married couple live together
July 23rd, 2010 - 12:34 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 22 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Thursday allowed a woman to live with her husband after she was forcibly restrained at home by her parents for marrying a man from a different caste. The police were also directed to provide protection to the couple.
“We are left with no option but to allow Goldi to accompany her husband Devender Gautam directly from the court,” said a division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice V.K. Jain.
The bench passed the order after talking to the girl, her husband and father separately in the chamber.
The court also directed the police officers present to ensure that enough security is being provided to the couple after Goldi expressed the fear that she and her husband will be harassed by the police as her father and some other relatives are employed with Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Police respectively.
Police Thursday brought the girl and her father before the court on a habeas corpus petition filed by Gautam, alleging that Goldi had been detained since May in her ancestral house in Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh after she revealed her inter-caste marriage at Arya Samaj temple here in 2005.
Gautam said both of them were majors when they got married and were staying with their respective parents so as to not hamper their careers but they were in touch with each other. The petitioner told the court that both of them got jobs recently and then revealed their marriage to their families.
However, after Goldi told her parents she had married Gautam, her family members beat her mercilessly and later confined her to their house, he claimed.
