Court issues notice to ASI over sad state of Jantar Mantar
January 27th, 2010 - 9:57 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notices to the central government, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) over the ruinous condition of Jantar Mantar, world’s recognized scientific heritage.
A division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw issued notices to the government, ASI and NDMC to respond by Feb 24.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) by Ravinder Nath Sharma and said the Jantar Mantar is presently in shambles due to neglect by the authorities responsible for its maintenance.
Built in 1724 by Sawai Jai Singh, Jantar Mantar is recognized as part of world’s scientific heritage.
“Not only the monument is lying neglected but is now being rampaged and disfigured beyond recognition. Astronomy scholars are at pains to see the pitiable condition of it,” the petition states.
Demanding its restoration and removal of all obstructions which cause hindrance in its working, the PIL states: “Red-tapism and slumber approach by authorities are the only reasons for the condition of this monument.”
